Audacity is a free Audio Editor and Recording environment. You can use it for a range of needs. From recording web radio streams and other inputs to converting your old analogue tape and vinyl collection to mp3's. You can apply effects onto sounds and clean up the general state of a sound file.
For mp3 support you need to download an additional "lame mp3 encoder" package (which is also free). It can be found here...
I would suggest visiting their homepage and downloading some of the add-on utilities to the software... yip its all free!!
